What is The Social Development Community of Latin America and the Caribbean?

The Social Development Community of Latin America and the Caribbean is a meeting platform for exchanging experiences and discussing social development policies in the region.

How was the Social Development Community of Latin America and the Caribbean created?

The Social Development Community of Latin America and the Caribbean emerges when facing challenges presented by the COVID-19 crisis, in the framework of the activities organized by the Presiding Officers of the Regional Conference on Social Development for Latin America and the Caribbean (RCSD).

Established in 2014 pursuant to ECLAC resolution 682(XXXV) and Economic and Social Council resolution 2014/32, the Conference’s objectives include promoting the development of national policies on social development and international, regional and bilateral cooperation in the field of social development, in order to examine multidimensional poverty and make progress on poverty measurement, inequality and structural gaps. Which are the specific objectives of the Social Development Community of Latin America and the Caribbean?

>Within the framework of the RCSD, the Social Development Community of Latin America and the Caribbean will facilitate:

  • a. A space to discuss and share knowledge about social development issues and policies in the region.
  • b. Forming and maintaining a learning community with all the entities in charge of and related to social development policies in the region.
  • c. To hold joint discussions on issues related to social development.
  • d. To promote exchange and cooperation between the countries, the civil society and the United Nations agencies, and the international cooperation in favour of the region´s social development.

Who can be part of the Social Development Community of Latin America and the Caribbean?

The Social Development Community of Latin America and the Caribbean is integrated by:

  • a. High authorities and officials from Social Development Ministries and equivalent entities from Latin American and Caribbean governments participating in the RCSD activities.
  • b. Civil servants, professionals, researchers, members of civil society organizations, NGOs, technicians and academics interested in the work done by the RCDS and social development policies and issues under discussion in this forum.
  • c. Representatives, specialists and UN agencies officials, and international cooperation agencies related to RCSD, and in the social development policies and issues addressed in that forum.
